A watch means be ready

A severe thunderstorm watch means storms with large hail and damaging wind are possible. Watches are large, covering numerous counties or even states, for a period of two to eight hours. When severe weather is reported or seen on radar, the National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm warning for a much smaller area, about the size of a city or small county.
